Spotlight on Denise Helms, owner of two Plaza del Lago clothing and accessory boutiques; Giggles and Giraffes for infants and children and La Colonna for women.

Denise shares the ultimate spring wardrobe and switch-out tips and unique options for you or gift giving ideas for the season.

Q: When did you get started in the boutique clothing industry?

A: I’ve been involved in specialty retail stores in some way or another for my entire life and I became the owner of Giggles & Giraffes in 2008 and La Colonna in 2011.

Q: How would you describe Giggles & Giraffes and La Colonna to potential customers?

Giggles & Giraffes is a North Shore favorite in Plaza del Lago with clothing for newborns to 12-year-olds. If you’re looking for a special gift or outfit, you will be pleased to find a great selection of classics, quality, and unique clothing. La Colonna is a specialty boutique filled with great name brands like Elliott Lauren, Gretchen Scott, Three Dot, Michael Stars and David Cline. We offer classic, casual, cool and colorful easy-to-wear chic clothing and fun accessories. You will find interesting gifts among the expansive jewelry selection. Customers tell us we’re known for excellent customer service from our expert stylists. And, we wrap!

Q: What do you recommend customers do to get ready for spring (switching out winter)?

Before switching out seasons, gather pieces and donate your gently used clothing to help keep current with trends. Donating an item after three years is a good rule to follow. After donating, you’ll have room for new pieces!

Q: What are the top three things you want La Colonna customers to know?

1. You can always find a variety of comfortable clothing that comes in each month.
2. We have great savings and sales going on throughout the year and you will always find a large assortment of “fun” accessories at La Colonna.
3. The personal attention you receive is one of the big reasons to shop at our store every season.

Q: Can you please share the most common wardrobe tips for parents of little ones and getting ready for spring?

1. Take the guesswork out of figuring out what size your infant will be next season, just double their current age and that’s what size they’ll be.
2. Use plastic containers and clearly label by age, season and sex when storing clothing to wear again. This will save time and remove stress when you’re unpacking, lending and storing.

Q: What do first-time customers tell you surprises them about your boutiques?

We are affordable! We have friendly, helpful staff and an amazing selection. Customers really love how easy it is to park and shop and, we offer beautiful free gift wrapping!

Q: Can you share spring/special occasion gift recommendations for women and little ones?

We just started carrying more baptismal gowns. Our customers were telling us these were difficult to find at reasonable prices. We’ve done the shopping for them and offer beautiful smocking gowns for girls and traditional options for boys, for under $100. La Colonna has a tasteful, new collection of dress suit jackets for weddings and formal occasions.

Q: What’s the best part of owning these two specialty clothing boutiques?

We’re side-by-side in Plaza del Lago and we love to find new clothing lines that are unique and special.
